Proactiv= Crack for my Skin

So...today I woke up and decided that enough was enough.... I have been playing this back and forth game for about 6 months now. What game you ask? The clear skin game.

So for many years, it has to be over 7 years I have been using Proactiv. I started using it because my sister gave me some left over cleanser that she had. And from there my love-hate relationship with Proactiv began.

I honestly don't remember what I used to wash my face before proactiv. But anyways, Proactiv is just way too expense. It really is... I never had a serious acne problem prior to using Proactiv. I just wanted my skin to be clearer and smooth from occasional blemishes..

So after having a mini falling out with Proactiv this past January, basically they kept sending me more and more products and charging my credit card even though I countlessly asked them to STOP, I resolved to no more proactiv. They refuses to take back the product that they sent me and charged me $60. So I took some pics of those bad boys and sold it on ebay.

After then I was resolved to find another skin care product that didn't cost over $40. I tried Ambi...Ambi was working just fine for about a month, but now looking back in hindsight, I guess it wasnt working, maybe my skin was maintaining because after all those years it was used to proactiv. But the next thing you know, I was breaking out all the time, my skin wasn't smooth and I was having these huge pimples that were the size of Stone Mountain.

So in the meantime, I started using this Mary Kay Cleansing bar that my mom got from her coworker. It was alright, but it made my face kind of dry after a while and smelled kind of odd. Also I think it as for old people...anyways, I decided to stop using that even though I do use it intermittently.

I decided to switch to Neutrogena's facial products, maybe it was all of the brain washing of the commercials. But I liked the way it smelled, but it wasn't really doing anything for my skin. Don't get me wrong I tried these products for a while. I used more than half of the cleanser, and I was still even using the Ambi Daily Moisturizer.

So that is when I had the epiphany today, that I need to just go back to the dark side. I realized that even though the Proactiv company makes me mad because they potentially rip people off with their "club" and automatic shipping of things that you didn't ask for, their product works. So I went to the mall kiosk that has an automatic vending machine type thing and got my proactiv. I'll let yall know how it goes. Hopefully my skin goes back to being amazing!

Articles I read today and my one sentence commentary..or not.

In my silent effort to rededicate myself to Reason to Believe, I wanted to share with you some articles that I read today...Just in case you were interested ...

The StayOver
This one discusses this "new" relationship, where couples stay over at each other's places 3 to 4 nights a week, even though they each have their own place... lol. This one made me laugh, because I thought this was normal. ::shrug::

Black Scientists Less Likely to Win Federal Research Grants
Surprise, surprise.. ok not really. But I hate to be pessimistic, but it's hard to see things as ever really changing

Is Natural Hair Dangerous...TSA seems to think so..
Aaah...ok, I read this article yesterday and I almost died at work. Thank you!! Finally someone has acknowledged this.. THis same thing happened to me, I always joke around, but its always something new when I go through security. But I remember this one particular time, I was going through TSA and even AFTER I went through the body scanners, this lady put on some gloves and "searched" my hair. I had some cute bobby pin do, and she completely messed it up. I was just ocnfused, b/c I was like if there was anything in my hair, they would have seen it in the body scanner. SMH.. (Ok that explanation was more than a sentence...eek)

::sidenote:: Yes I've been through the body scanners numerous times... do I feel violated? Umm the fact that they can see my nude body doesn't bother me..what bothers me is I have to spread my legs and put my hands up while all the other passengers watch for that thing to whirl around..lol. anyways.. :sidenote over::

Earth Hour, "Lights Out"

Hey Guys!! I want to first say, "IT'S SPRING BREAK!!!" Woohoo... But (yes there is always a but)... The first one is unfortunately I'm still in St. Louis... womp womp. The even bigger womp is, it snowed this morning... Yes. It is officially Spring, but it snowed this morning. Needless to say it is below freezing right now. Anyhow, I am glad to have this small break. I'll be going home later on in the week, but I have a lot of stuff that I needed to get done, and I know I would have just worried about them at home. So I needed to just stay, suck it up and get all of my extra work done.

Ok so back to the reason I came to write this post. Currently I am in the dark, typing by candle light. Why? It's not because I didn't pay my light bill, but today is the day that "Earth Hour" is being observed.

So what is Earth Hour? It is a movement that was started in 2007, to observe an hour out of the day (8:30-9:30, your time zone), in which all lights would be turned off. Sounds simple right... Exactly. I think it is is awesome, that people are so concerned about the earth and the fact that we as humans really need to be more sustainable.

Since living on my own, I have become way more conscious about the amount of my personal electricity use. Even as a child, my mom would constantly "remind/nag" us about turning off the light when you leave a room or turning off the TV. After a couple electricity bills that have been extremely high, I have adopted the same principles.

Yesterday when I was driving home, at the "wee" hours of the morning, I was one of the few cars on the road, and I could help but notice how many lights were on.. It was actually quite baffling. I live by several car dealerships and the parking lot was so bright it was outrageous. Many stores and buildings had so many lights on even though they had long closed for the light. The amount of energy that we are using is taxing our environment and just because we dont see the impact directly, does not mean it is not happening.

Gas has now reached the highest that it has ever been since I have started driving. Currently it is ~3.46 a gallon. It hurts every single time I go to the gas station. Ugh...

Below is some more detailed information about Earth Hour and some really cool pictures!!

Earth Hour is held on Saturday March 27 at 8.30pm-9.30pm and succeeds in being a global call to action to stand up, to take responsibility, and lead the global journey to a sustainable future. A record 128 countries and territories take part and iconic buildings and landmarks from Asia Pacific to Europe and Africa to the Americas stand in darkness.

http://www.aolnews.com/2011/03/26/earth-hour-2011-photos/

Earth Hour is a global grass-roots movement encouraging individuals, businesses and governments around the world to take positive actions for the environment, and celebrating their commitment to the planet by switching off their lights for one designated hour.
Earth Hour 2011 aims to show the actions that people, businesses and governments world-wide are taking to reduce their environmental impact. Thereby establishing and encouraging others to join an interconnected global community engaged in dialogue and resource sharing that generates real solutions to environmental challenges.
The highlight of Earth Hour 2011 will see the world’s most iconic landmarks go dark for one designated hour, as hundreds of millions of people transcend race, religion, culture, society, generation and geography, switching off their lights in a global celebration of their commitment to protect the one thing that unites us all – the planet.

A random rant, a little bit of everything...

So it is nice to know that people actually read my blog. During my hiatus for about a month, I've gotten a few comments inquiring about new posts. So that made me feel pretty good. lol.

Last month was interesting... 2nd year, 2nd semester has been tricky. We have periods where there aren't that many tests and then this past week has been beyond crazy. Several different tests in a relatively short time period. I have been doing well on most of them, so that makes me happy.

So I decided to come write a post because I had a really long rant on twitter on African Americans and certain diseases such as heart disease, hypertension, stroke, diabetes, etc...

Basically I am tired of sitting in class and hearing my professor tell us about how most disease black people are more at risk. I could get technical and find all of the data/figures/statistics, but I really dont feel like it right now.

So my original twitter rant, which I might copy paste after this post in case you want it in real time (with grammatical errors and all), stemmed from the fact that I decided to flat iron my hair. So as most of you know my hair has been natural for almost 3 years. In that 3 years I have rarely straightened my hair. I think that is for several reasons. The first reason is I took a swim class both semesters my senior year, while I was at Emory. And straightening your hair is kind of counter productive when you are in the pool at least 3 times a week.

That kind of just carried over to me being here in Missouri. In addition, I love the versatility and creativity that natural hair provides me. Do I think I am making some type of "statement" by having my hair natural, not necessarily. I do think it is more exciting and a break from the mundaness of it all.

Ok whew I just got off on another tangent. So my "flat iron" iron hair rant started mostly because I noticed that this past week, I have only worked out twice. The day after I straightened my hair I wanted to work out, but I decided not to so I dont mess my hair up (::problem::). And the two days I did workout it was a "mini-workout"... So I didnt think about it much until today.

I was sitting in class (not tweeting) and I remembered an article that I read a couple months ago about black women and their health. The author linked her lack of consistent exercise to her inability to workout often and how ridiculous that was...while reading the article (with my head full of kinky curls) all I could do was shake my head. But now I have found myself suffering from a similar predicament.

With all of the stress, I decided that I was going to do an intense workout once I get home so I can release some tension/stress, which was going to help me focus more for my test tomorrow.

Ok so I completely forgot where I was going with this... my blogging got interrupted by an "interesting" phone call.

A how to tutorial for Polyvore

I have been saying for quite some time that I was going to post a couple of tutorial videos on how to make "sets" on Polyvore. It really does take some time to "perfect" your skills. Each set takes me a while, mostly because I am indecisive and there are just so many options. This is helping me get my urge for fashion/shopping out of the way without spending precious money. Hope you enjoy the videos and if you create a profile be sure to add me.

Some Shirts I have Been Digging...

So I'm not much of a screen tee kind of person, but there have been a couple shirts that I have eyeing for a while, but I just haven't brought myself to buy.

#1- Brown Skin Lady Tee

I just really like this shirt. It's simple! I like the font, the mustard shirt with the brown writing... Love it! I am brown skin and I'm a lady!

#2- I love my hair
So I saw this shirt today and I absolutely fell in love!! But what I'm wondering is why do they have a white girl with straight hair modeling it. lol. If you haven't seen the video, I did a quick blogpost on it a couple weeks ago here. If you go to the website they show a zoomed in pic of the actual shirt.

They have a lot of cute shirts!! These are 3 of my favorite ones.

Oh yeah, just in case you didn't know click on the link to go to the websites!

There is beauty in everything. I plan on explaining how and why I picked certain pieces and why I placed them where they are. So each design has taken me about 20-30 minutes to design. It may appear a lot easier than it is...lol. I think that takes me the longest is the layer.. To make certain things pop... haha! It may just look like a bunch of haphazard jumbled stuff thrown together, but trust me it's not!!

No Stress November

Yo! So I'm in the computer lab, typing a paper for a class... So I have a lot going on, my to-do is overflowing (my cup runneth over), but those seem to be the times that I find time to write on my blog. It is the 2nd to last day of November. Overall, I will say that November was indeed a lovely month. As you all know, Autumn/Fall is indeed my favorite season. Not only is it the only season with 2 names, but it is just beautiful. I treated myself to a mani the other day, and I got this cute orange color!! It makes me smile every time I look at my nails.

Today is the first day back from Thanksgiving Break. My break was wonderful, it was nice to get home and spend time with family and friends. A much needed hiatus from all of the hustle and bustle that school presents.

Also happy belated birthday to me. Lol. I'm 23 now... weird! I don't feel old or young...I just am. So I used to post my weekly "frisky"scope, but I stopped that many months ago. I think I am going to resume that. Once I get over these next 3 weeks, I will have a WHOLE MONTH off.. I won't know what to do with myself.

So I declared this November as being "No stress November" and for the most part, I will say it has been rather stressful, but I have managed to turn all of my distress into eustress. Yay for me! So I'm still chipping at the side of the huge iceberg (caught a glimpse of Titanic the other night..love that movie).

Giving Credit When It's Due...SheaMoisture

So a couple weeks before I moved back here, I was in Target with my sisters, we were hunting for products for my sister who was deciding to go natural. (Yup all three of us are natural now!!!!!!!!!) Anyways, I decided to try out a new shampoo and moisturizer, because although I love Miss Jessie's products they are way too pricey and the amount of ingredients/chemicals in them are unheard of!

So I decided to try out the SheaMoisture products, I remember someone saying they were pretty good, and since they were only $9.99 a pop (pretty cheap in natural land) I decided to get them. I ended up buying the Organic Coconut Curl Enhancing Smoothie and Organic Coconut and Hibiscus Brilliant Curl Smoothie... both for Thick Curly Hair (whew that was a mouthful)... And so far I LOVE THEM!!!!

The shampoo and curl enhancing smoothie leave my hair feeling so moisturized and hydrated!!! It's so soft and just overall amazing! Miss Jessie's better watch out because I might have a new Holy Grail product.

Not only are they both organic and all natural but they have:
-No parablens
-No sulfates
-No synthetic color
-No animal testing
-No synthetic fragrance
-No mineral oil
-No gluten
-No paraffin
-No propylene glycol
-No paba
-no dea
-no animal ingredients

Whew that was a long list, and best of all it is affordable, I don't have to sell my unborn child to afford it.
If you are looking for a new relatively inexpensive product to try out, give the SheaMoisture a try, a little goes a long way!

Until Next Time...

Oh You Fancy huh?

So even though Drake gets on my nerves and STL has taken it upon themselves to make sure a song of his plays at least once every 10 minutes...this song is catchy.

Ok so what does the post title have to do with anything? Well it's weird that whenever I get on here, I am unsatisfied with my template design and I always change it...it's kind of weird because as much as I would like to be consistent there are so many different combinations, that it is hard to just choose one.

With all that being said, I have actually gone back to the autumn leaves background. As some of you may know, Autumn/Fall is my favorite season!!! First it is the only season that has two names, so that automatically makes it cooler. And I love the smooth transition that everything seems to undergo. You teeter (is that a word?) between warm breezes and cool nights. I love walks at night in fall, simply romantic!! aaah!! Also I love the way the trees change colors...some trees change faster than others, so you have a medley of deep auburns, to burnt oranges, to minty green leaves!! Once the leaves start to gently fall....it's so beautiful.

Wow I got off topic, don't even remember what I started this post about. Oh I think I was going to discuss changes, more technology orientated changes. I like the new template for Twitter... it just seems to make sense, you can actually understand what some is replying to now. Also it aesthetically looks better. Blogger has also made it easier to upload pics, so that's cool. I like new ways of doing things.

In a weird turn of events, I actually don't really have TV right now. So I still have the same TV I have had since college, but I have no cable and since the "digital migration" you can't just stick the cable cord into the wall anymore and get cable if you have an analog tv. So in an attempt not to spend $70 on a stupid box and antenna thingy, I have tried everything possible. Also I tried getting satellite, but the way my apt faces won't actually give me a signal...yeah and I am not really trying to come out of the pocket $50 for some cable. So I have just been watching movies and watching the staples (Grey's Anatomy, Desperate Housewives, and RHOA) on hulu. Thank goodness for HULU! But I am considering just getting the stupid box thingy... so we will see. Until Next Time...

You know what I love...that's right, my hair!

I absolutely love this video!!! My line sister sent it to me earlier today. I heard about it through twitter, and I am glad that I finally got to see it. This is extremely important for young black girls. Our society, especially black culture really needs to start accepting each other for who we are. It is almost ingrained that at a certain age you should get your hair straightened or permed, but why can't you just love your hair the way it grows out of your scalp?

Anyways, positive affirmations are great and can do so much for women/girls self-esteem. I am glad that people are really starting to be more open minded and accepting. Black women can be beautiful in so many different ways!! Love it!

INFJ- Myers Briggs Type Indicator

So this weekend, I had to go to a mandatory leadership retreat... It was all day, but there were some parts that were pretty informative. The rest of it they could have saved. Anyways, one of the part I enjoyed was we took the Myers-Briggs Test. It is a really famous personality test. This is the 2nd time I have taken. The first time was in high school (AP Psychology). So when I took it in high school I was an ENFJ... But now my personality has shifted to an INFJ.

So basically what do those letters mean?

I: Introverted or E: Extroverted
N: Intuition or S: Sensing
F: Feeling or T: Thinking
J: Judging or P: Perceiving

So basically I am "Introverted, Intuitive, Feeling, and Judging"
Again you can ask what does that mean?

Well on the outset, those people who know me might be a little baffled that I am Introverted... That is the only thing that changed since High school. I must say that Optometry school has made me a tad bit more introverted. I definitely enjoy my private space a lot more and a lot of times I can really sit and be alone in my thoughts and that is alright.

It is so weird because as I read read the description it was me exactly...so WEIRD!! But apparently only 1% of the people in the world are INFJ. Hmmm....

As an INFJ, your primary mode of living is focused internally, where you take things in primarily via intuition. Your secondary mode is external, where you deal with things according to how you feel about them, or how they fit with your personal value system.

INFJs are gentle, caring, complex and highly intuitive individuals. Artistic and creative, they live in a world of hidden meanings and possibilities. Only one percent of the population has an INFJ Personality Type, making it the most rare of all the types.

INFJs place great importance on havings things orderly and systematic in their outer world. They put a lot of energy into identifying the best system for getting things done, and constantly define and re-define the priorities in their lives. On the other hand, INFJs operate within themselves on an intuitive basis which is entirely spontaneous. They know things intuitively, without being able to pinpoint why, and without detailed knowledge of the subject at hand. They are usually right, and they usually know it. Consequently,

INFJs put a tremendous amount of faith into their instincts and intuitions. This is something of a conflict between the inner and outer worlds, and may result in the INFJ not being as organized as other Judging types tend to be. Or we may see some signs of disarray in an otherwise orderly tendency, such as a consistently messy desk.

INFJs have uncanny insight into people and situations. They get "feelings" about things and intuitively understand them. As an extreme example, some INFJs report experiences of a psychic nature, such as getting strong feelings about there being a problem with a loved one, and discovering later that they were in a car accident. This is the sort of thing that other types may scorn and scoff at, and the INFJ themself does not really understand their intuition at a level which can be verbalized. Consequently, most INFJs are protective of their inner selves, sharing only what they choose to share when they choose to share it. They are deep, complex individuals, who are quite private and typically difficult to understand. INFJs hold back part of themselves, and can be secretive.

Yup. So I have to run off to lab. Until Next Time...

The Story of Cosmetics and Story of Bottled Water

So earlier this year, January 31st to be exact, I did a blogpost on the STORY OF STUFF... It was through this great website that I stumbled upon. Well since then The Story of Stuff has become a Project and more informative videos have been released.

With over 12 million on-line views, The Story of Stuff is one of the most widely viewed environmental-themed short films of all time. Since its release in December 2007, The Story of Stuff has been shown in thousands of schools, houses of worship, community events and businesses around the world.
The Story of Stuff Project was created by Annie Leonard to leverage and extend the film’s impact. We amplify public discourse on a series of environmental, social and economic concerns and facilitate the growing Story of Stuff community’s involvement in strategic efforts to build a more sustainable and just world.

I recently watched two more videos which were the Story of Cosmetics and the Story of Bottled Water.
The Story of Cosmetics was only 8 mins long, but in those very short minutes I was enlightened
so much. She discusses how a lot of the the beauty products that both men and women use such as shampoos, conditioners, shaving cream, lotions, lip sticks, etc are actually really hazardous to our health. Also she talks about how the FDA really has no direct policing policies on these industries.. Prolonged use of these products are actually detrimental to our health. She even talked about how perms (relaxers) are so very bad for you and how the harsh chemicals can be absorbed into your body and mentioned that it can also be detrimental to beauty standards...she really "hit the nail on the head."

The other video was on the Story of Bottled Water...amazing! Very concise and she really unearthed the "Conspiracy" that these companies have used to brainwash soo many American consumers. For example, both Dasani and Aquafina have admitted to bottling filtered tap water. I must say since last year I have gotten a lot better with reducing my consumption of bottle water and just using my Filter and a reusable water bottle (check out this blogpost that I did on "Doing YOUR Part")...sidenote: but it seems as though since I've been home for the summer, I havent been doing so well on that because the fridge in my house is full of bottle water....Anyways.. Annie does a remarkable job of coming up with effective solutions and just informing you on how using and buying bottled water can be detrimental to the environment and each other.

Below are the videos..ENJOY!

Oh and I decided to use the above picture because I think it really made a statement...we shop and then we take out so much trash...If we had less things, we would have less trash...oh Consumerism.

H-A-I-R

So I haven't had a hair update in a while...mostly because nothing was really new. I have tried a couple new styles, like french braiding the back, sometimes with twist in...honestly I've been a little lazy...

The only new thing I have really tried is this "Pre-Pooing" thing. Basically Pre-pooing stands for Pre-Shampooing. It's basically when you put oils and/or conditioner in your hair while it is still dry and you let it sit before shampooing and conditioning your hair. Some people sit under a dryer for about 20 minutes. Well the first time I did it, I just used this Essential Oil spray mixture I have and a handful of Herbal Essences Hello Hydration Conditioner, and put a plastic cap on for about 30 minutes. This time I am trying out an alternate way...I put the same mixture in my hair and wet a towel, then put the same plastic cap on top. So yeah...I look a little crazy right now with a towel and plastic cap on my head.lol.

I hope I have the same results as last time. When I was done washing my hair, my hair was noticeably softer and easier to detangle... I have been meaning to try a new shampoo/conditioner, but I haven't gotten around to finding some that I want to try. So I'm just using Creme of Nature Detangling Conditioning Shampoo, and Miss Jessie's Creme de la Creme Conditioner along with Herbal Essences Hello Hydration.

(Oh and that is actually an older pic, from Cinco de Mayo... It just happens to be my fb profile pic, so I figured I would add it... Oh and check out Nessa...she is on the Red Carpet, and she looks fab)

Some random hair thoughts...

So one of the things that I like about my hair is the fact that it is versatile... Back when I had a perm I honestly had two styles...wear it down or in a ponytail. That got boring quick!! And I think having my hair like this had led me to be a much more creative person. I just kind of make up things as I go along..or how I feel in the morning/night before. I saw this quote on  BGLH (Black Girl with Long Hair)  by Eboni and I loved it...

"It’s… sad that we as a population are being bamboozled into thinking the only way we’ll be not just beautiful, but successful and respected, is by altering our hair to look like someone else’s… Our hair is good enough. WE are good enough just the way we are."

I liked this quote because I completely agree...I think BAMBOOZLED is the word that I have been searching for. Like Eboni says, I don't think being natural is the ONLY way, but often it seems like that is what black females have been indoctrinated to believe since their first perm. Often people ask me if I plan on being natural forever...umm honestly I can't answer that question..or the other question I get is if I have something against females with straight hair. By no mean do I, and i hate that it seems like it has to be one or the other..I think they are both options, but it is good to have options. Whew that was a tangent..

So this is random, but I saw a new video of Janelle Monae's...and although I like a good amount of her music, I am honestly getting really tired of her SAME OL' hairstyle...like its ridiculous. The first few times, ok first 30 times I saw it..I thought it was cute. And on many hairblogs, people try and imitate the her style... I'm not hating, I just think J. Monae is beautiful and she should just try something different...lol.

But then again everyone is different and I can't impose my personal views on others...but still. I just wanna see a different hairstyle. But do you think it is actually possible to wear the same hairstyle for 3 years straight? I would go crazy!!!

But on another note, I do love love love love Shingai Shoniwa from Noisettes. Her voice AND her hair AND her style! Last year I did a post on Noisettes, check it out here... Anyways, I just wanted to close this post with some cute pics of her. Yay for REAL Black female artists...
